While still in high school Onno Govaert (1987, Kaatsheuvel, NL) was already playing with such well-known Dutch jazz musicians as Eric Vloeimans and Harmen Fraanje. He moved to Amsterdam to study jazz drums and graduated cum laude from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in 2009.

His playing has variously been described as ‘innovative’, ‘spectacular’, ‘relentless’, ‘possessed by the devil’ and ‘post Jim Black’. ‘Onno Govaert stokes the band’s fires with spazzy rumbles and unflagging motion’, commented Chicago Reader, and Volkskrant described his style as ‘full of initiative and uninhibited.’

Onno has appeared regularly in the Bimhuis, including a 2013 Carte Blanche and has taken part two Young VIPS tours for young Dutch talent. In 2015 he will again complete a Young VIPS tour, this time with pianist Kaja Draksler in the duo Feecho.

Onno has played at leading European festivals including Moers, Cerkno, Reykjavik, Kosice, Jazzmarathon Brussels, Borealis and ArtActs. He has appeared in venues throughout the world – Centro Cultural Sao Paolo, Cave 12 (CH), Wind Up Space (US), Goethe Insitute Lisbao and others.
Beside his regular ensembles – Cactus Truck, Stadhouders/Goavert/deJoode, Feecho – Onno plays with a broad spectrum of creative musicians, including Ab Baars, Terri Ex, Andy Moore, Ken Vandermark, Theo Loevendie, Dave Rempis, Peter Jacquemyn, Joost Buis and Ig Henneman.

Luis Vicente

Onno Govaert

Seppe Gebruers

This exquisite trio featuring Luis Vicente on Trumpet, Seppe Gebruers on piano and  Onno Govaert on drums, gathers three European improvisers who are really active in the European music-scene.

'The last concert, starting after midnight, trumpet player Luís Vicente, piano player Seppe Gebruers and drummer Onno Govaert went through the paths of improvised music. If the first as we know him, opted by a more jazzistic approach, Seppe Gebruers assumed a diferent direction, bringing a playing with clear classical influences. We didn’t knew anything about him and he became the big surprise of this festival, revealing himself as superlative musician.Dind’t take time to understand why this group plays without doublebass, he plays with “heavy hand” reminding Cecil Taylor, at the same time changes himself when the music asked for subtlety and refinement. We could listen to the impressionists, Messiaen, contrasting with an extreme input on dynamics by Govaert on drums( loud and fast playing but smooth and delicated as well), and assertive as lyrical phrases by Vicente. Dealing with contrasts was the way taken by the trio, playing always unpredictable and surprisingly.
